9 Impact of networked learning on quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation
Quality assurance issues were not raised to any extent
in the interviews; however, the questionnaire data indicated that
some initial evaluations of staff and student take up and experiences
were taking place, although this was not carried out on a regular
basis. References to this type of monitoring were also found in three
interviews, but these were mainly connected with activities within
the Business School.
We did a focus group with students, an evaluation,
when we did the pilot study with the Business School. (H2I2A)
The
rapid development process. It is being evaluated at the moment… (H2I2B)
…
in the Business school they did quite an extensive evaluation on
how [the VLE] was being used… (H2I2B)
One respondent spoke
about the need for quality procedural changes for summative assessment.
We’re
looking to make it change but I think it needs a lot of thought
as to how we do it. At the moment I don’t think
we have the infrastructure that would support it but we really
need to see what to do for summative assessment. There are so
many issues
to consider what’s the best way of doing it?, What technology
do we have to have to support it?, What sort of back up would
we need to support it?, How is it assessed? Issues of plagiarism,
of
copying, all these things. How do you develop it? How do you
make sure that you get really sound assessment techniques? All
these things
need to be looked at. (H2I2A)
Another respondent spoke more generally
about the changes required and about the need for guidelines
for e learning
…
what the university did in terms of distance learning, was to adopt
the QAA guidelines on distance learning as a university policy … but
what we are also hoping to put in place is guidelines for e learning
in its entirety….I’ve got quite high confidence that
at the moment things are working well but if we don’t put
something in place that is not ad hoc I think we could be exposed
as the market
expands as it were. (H2I6)
Summary
Quality assurance issues were not raised to
any extent in the interviews; however, the questionnaire data suggested
that
some initial evaluations
of staff and student take up had occurred. The need to adapt
quality assurance procedures to address the requirements
of online assessment
was also recognised. Quality assurance procedures and the
evaluation of the student experience were seen as requiring further
development
